Some Downtown Historic Neighborhoods:
Fort Wood Historic District is located just east of Chattanooga's original 1838 boundaries; it was annexed by the city in 1851. Named in honor of General Thomas Wood, the original "fort" was an earthwork stronghold constructed by Union forces in 1863 during their occupation of Chattanooga. During the late-nineteenth century scattered residences were built in the area. From 1895 to 1920 developement of Fort Wood began in earnest, becoming home to wealthy businessmen. Fort Wood exhibits a variety of architectural styles, including Foursquare, Tudor, Dutch Colonial, Dutch Revival, Greek Revival, Neo Classical, Italian Renaissance, Eclectic and an impressive collection of Queen Anne-style homes.
Ferger Place Historic District is an early exclusive subdivision in what was then farm land outside the city. Developed in 1910 by Realtor, Herman Ferger, it was Chattanooga's first "restricted private park" and its peak building period occurred between 1915 and 1930. A variety of architectural styles are represented in the neighborhood, including Italian Villa, Colonial Revival and Spanish Revival. The area was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.
St. Elmo Historic District was developed in 1870 by Colonel A.M. Johnson on land he purchased after Civil the war. Named after a popular novel of the period, St. Elmo was annexed in 1929. Because of its out-of-the-way location most buildings escaped the wrecking ball leaving the neighborhood intact for the most part. A sight worth seeing, St. Elmo contains a large concentration of some of Chattanooga's oldest historic homes.
Highland Park not an historic district yet, this turn of the century neighborhood has been transformed almost overnight by restoration activity. Scores of young couples are attracted to Highland Park by its good housing stock ranging from large two story American Foursquares to modest Bungalows at attractive prices.
